SJC would like to recognize the CTR Master Teacher Award Winner for 2021- Mrs. Micheal Wiens. Mrs. Wiens’ commitment to being the exemplar of an excellent teacher is outstanding. Whether in her Physical Education classes, her role as Athletic Director and in planning athletics extracurricular activities, or her ability to develop strong relationships with her students and colleagues, she embodies all of the criteria of a Master Teacher. In her Physical Education classes, Mrs. Wiens works tirelessly to ensure that all outcomes of the curriculum are met even with online teaching and COVID restrictions in place. Her ability to be flexible and adaptable yet provide the structure necessary for student success helps develop students’ desires to maintain their physical wellness both in and outside of her classroom. She is also committed to working with our sister schools in the community to scaffold both curricular and extracurricular athletics programming and has developed relationships with colleagues across the division to share best practices in athletics. Furthermore, Mrs. Wiens spends an inordinate amount of time creating valid, comprehensive, and fair assessments for her students and gives of her own time because that is what is best for students. She encourages all students to participate in extracurricular sports; she is a champion for all students. As well, because she is thoroughly versed in the rules and regulations of the ASAA, she is willing to stand up against dissenting voices and opinions to ensure equality and fairness for all. Mrs. Wiens’ strongest quality is her ability to build and maintain strong relationships with her students and colleagues. She communicates effectively with administration, staff, and parents and has high expectations for herself and her students. Students often seek her out for academic and athletic advice; they respect and love her and will often stay in contact with her well beyond their graduating year. Because of her commitment of time and care, Mrs. Wiens helps make SJC an excellent school.
SJC would like to recognize the CTR Power of One Award Winner for 2021- Mr. Ricardo Camacho. The backbone of SJC, Ricardo infuses his work with joy. Despite working mostly behind the scenes, Ricardo’s efforts to maintain a healthy, safe, and clean work environment cannot go unnoticed. His strongest attribute is his ability to see where improvements can be made in the school. He communicates his ideas well and is a trusted liaison with the division’s Facilities department to get projects completed. COVID regulations have placed an extra workload on Ricardo and his team, but he has met these challenges with grace and positivity. He has worked tirelessly to become knowledgeable in all sanitizing and cleaning procedures, protocols, and products, and has strictly adhered to all the extra reporting requirements that have become necessary in this new climate. Furthermore, Ricardo leads his custodial staff with confidence and kindness, and has worked to build their capacities in their jobs. As well, Ricardo shoulders incredible responsibility for the maintenance of all the Catholic schools in Brooks and is always on call to attend to emergent issues on his personal time. His communication with administration is exemplary as he works to ensure that all stakeholders are aware of maintenance and emergency considerations. He makes himself available to all staff during the day to attend to their specific needs and is a patient teacher when relaying facilities information. He is a humble and respectful advocate for the needs of the school and takes pride in his profession. SJC is very blessed to have Ricardo as part of our school family and a very important member of our team. He is extremely deserving of this award.
SJC would like to recognize the CTR Above & Beyond Award Winner for 2021- Mr. Mark Harris. SJC would like to recognize the CTR Above & Beyond Award Winner for 2021- Mr. Mark Harris. Mr. Harris joyfully goes above and beyond to help ensure a vibrant arts program at SJC. Whether it is being trained on the manlift to help adjust lighting for the drama department, setting up and running sound equipment for all events in the school, developing the Band program from Grade Five to Twelve, or working with students one-on-one to build their music and technical theatre skills, Mr. Harris enters into any task with charisma and enthusiasm. For example, this year he volunteered to sit on the Brooks Arts, Culture, and Heritage Board so that he could have access to a performance space that would allow for his students to participate fully in Band class while adhering to COVID regulations. Despite the challenges that the pandemic has brought, he has worked tirelessly to give students arts opportunities including entering them into a virtual music festival, recording and accompanying students’ individual performances, and sharing student performances online with the school. He “wanted to make sure that people knew that the band was still working hard and performing” even though that meant significantly more work for him. As well, Mr. Harris is able to nurture students’ love of music, develop their musical skills as they move through the grades, and encourage them to consider a career in music after high school. Mr. Harris’ infectious passion for all that he does and the energy with which he does it, inspires all who know him to emulate him in their own work. SJC is blessed to have Mark Harris on staff.
Tomorrow is our last day of classes! Help us celebrate by wearing SJC/Crusader wear!

Miss Antony's English 10 class recently completed a novel study on “Escape from Slavery” by Francis Bok. Many of the students were able to personally identify with the story, since a lot of the students are former refugees and current English language learners. These students are highly motivated to get the word out about slavery, and even wrote and mailed out a letter to Francis Bok to see if he would be willing to speak with them. Great work English 10!
